Letters To (and From) the Tooth Fairy

Greetings. Thank you very much for taking the time to write to me, I will certainly try to do the same thing, and return your note promptly. I know there is often a great deal of confusion around losing your teeth, and how to best take care of them. One of my favorite things about my job is having the chance to teach you how to be as healthy as you can be - and keep your teeth as healthy as they can be too! If you have any particular questions about me, feel free to read both my bio and the FAQ's, as a lot of what you may be wondering may already be answered. But I'd still love to hear from you, and you can email me at ToothFairy@tinkertank.org.

Thanks so much - Bruce B. (The Tooth Fairy)

Dear Bruce

I hate flossing my teeth because it hurts and takes too long. My mom says that I have to floss my teeth otherwise they will all fall out and I will have to wear dentures. Do they even make dentures for kids? And if so, can I just put them in the dishwasher? And besides, when I lost my baby teeth, new ones just grew back in. Is she right that that only happens with baby teeth?

Sam M.

Well Sam,

You have to floss your teeth. You have to brush them too. Because if they rot and fall out, you don’t get another set. You get one set of baby teeth that are small enough of it in your baby mouth and allow you to eat the healthful food that you need in order to grow. Once you grow up, you get ONE set of grown up teeth, and that’s it. They have to last you your WHOLE life.

Flossing isn’t that big a hassle, you just have to make a habit of it. Same with brushing.

Yes, I suppose they make dentured for kids, but that would be an even bigger hassle. For one thing, you would hate all the dentist appointmets to have them made. Then again to have bigger one's made when you are older. Then againw hen you are grown up. And it's even harder to take care of those - you have to clean them each night, each time you eat, and so on. Just take care of your own, it's easier.

And no, you don't get another set.

Dear Bruce

My friend Chelsea says that you left her $5 for her tooth. And my friend Celia gets DVDs for her teeth. And I only got $1. Was I bad or something, or was maybe something wrong with my tooth?

Sally Z.

Oh Sally,

This is s tough concept, but it’s all relative. Different families have different traditions where baby-teeth are concerned, and I have to honor all of them. Have you ever noticed that when you start the new school year, or you join a sports team, your parents have to fill out a pile of paperwork? It’s the same thing with me. When you start losing teeth, your parents fill out a form, and give it to me, along with your first baby tooth. That way, I always know what to get. I am very serious about protecting the traditions of each family – some of them were passed down for generations, and I would hate to mess with that! You’d be surprised by some of the things that people have me leave their kids – spiced nuts, jewelry, pennies, books….. you name it, I’ve seen it, and found a way to leave it under some kid’s pillow.

Dear Bruce

What do you do with all the teeth? And why do you sometimes leave mine behind?

Meredith B.

Well Meredith,

I’m afraid that I can’t tell you what I am doing with the teeth. It’s a secret that we’re working on, and I’ll tell you as soon as I can. (But, I’d love to know what you and your friends think I do with the teeth, if you want to write me back and tell me.)

As for why I sometimes leave them behind. I never mean to, but sometimes I’m just really tired and I get sloppy. I bet that happens to you sometimes too. I’m only human, (well, mostly human, anyway!)
